Walvis Bay Gates & Port Access Information

Walvis Bay Gates refer to the secured entry points of the Port of Walvis Bay. The port is operated by the Namibian Ports Authority, commonly known as Namport. Because the port is a high security area, access is strictly controlled and only permitted with the correct authorization. The gates play a key role in managing who enters and exits the port.

The port gates regulate access for different users. These include maritime workers, commercial truck drivers, port staff, and in some cases tourists. All access to the secure port zone is monitored by security guards stationed at the gates. Anyone wishing to enter must present valid permits and identification.

Visitors who require access must obtain the correct permits from the Namport office, which is located close to the main entrance gate. Travelers should be aware that, according to visitor feedback, the gate office previously accepted only cash payments. It is advised to carry cash in case this payment method is still in place.

In 2025, expansion work was underway to improve the main entrance gate of the Port of Walvis Bay. As part of this project, traffic changes were introduced. In April 2025, detours were active around Rikumbi Kandanga Road because the railway level crossing near the port was temporarily closed. Road users were advised to follow signage and allow extra travel time when approaching the port area.

Tourists arriving by cruise ship can enter through the port, but special rules apply. Cruise passengers are allowed to disembark at the Port of Walvis Bay after completing immigration procedures. A day visitor visa is issued on arrival for cruise guests, and a day visit fee applies. These arrangements are specific to cruise ship arrivals and do not apply to general visitors.

Customs and immigration offices are located close to the port gates. For sailing and private vessel clearance, two customs offices are positioned near the main gates. One office is located at a security post with customs staff, while another is housed in a separate building without clear signage. Operating hours for customs services are usually from 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. daily.

Understanding Walvis Bay Gates procedures helps visitors, sailors, and cruise passengers plan their arrival and avoid delays when accessing the port.
