Sandwich Harbour Morning Tour from Walvis Bay

Sandwich Harbour Morning Tour is a half day guided experience that explores one of Namibia’s most famous coastal areas. This tour shows how the Namib Desert meets the Atlantic Ocean, while also offering chances to see desert wildlife and coastal birds. It is well suited for nature lovers, photographers, and first time visitors to the coast.

The tour lasts about four hours and begins early in the morning at the Walvis Bay Lagoon. This lagoon is one of Namibia’s key birding sites. During certain seasons, flocks of flamingos, pelicans, and plovers can be seen flying over the water or feeding in the shallow areas. The early morning light creates calm conditions for viewing birds and taking photos.

From the lagoon, the journey continues south toward Sandwich Harbour. The route follows a narrow stretch of land where ocean waves roll in on one side and tall sand dunes rise on the other. Depending on the tide, the drive may stay along the beach or move inland through dune corridors. These changing routes make each tour slightly different.

Sandwich Harbour Lagoon was once used as a natural harbour by fishermen in the 19th century. Over time, shifting dunes closed off the bay, leaving behind a quiet and remote area. Today, it is a protected wilderness with wide open views and little human activity. Your guide explains the local ecosystem, ancient marine fossils found in the area, and the history of this coastline.

The tour includes guided dune driving, with climbs and descents over high dunes handled by an experienced driver. From the top, you can enjoy wide views where the desert and ocean meet. Coastal fog may appear, adding soft light that works well for photography.

Wildlife sightings are possible and may include springbok, ostriches, jackals, and hyenas. Smaller animals such as geckos, beetles, and snakes may also be seen. During the tour, your guide sets up a scenic coffee break in the dunes overlooking the ocean. A light brunch is served while you enjoy the quiet space of the desert.

Important things to know include wearing comfortable walking shoes. Bring a hat, sunscreen, sunglasses, a camera, and a windbreaker due to coastal winds.
