Sandwich Harbour Sunset Tour is a late afternoon excursion that explores one of Namibia’s most well known coastal areas. This tour focuses on the meeting point of the Namib Desert and the Atlantic Ocean during sunset. It is ideal for travelers who enjoy nature, birdlife, photography, and calm moments at the end of the day.
The tour lasts about four hours and begins at the Walvis Bay Lagoon in the late afternoon. This area is one of Namibia’s important birding sites. Depending on the season, you may see flamingos, pelicans, and plovers flying over the lagoon or feeding in shallow water. The soft afternoon light makes this part of the tour relaxing and enjoyable.
From the lagoon, you travel south toward Sandwich Harbour. The route follows a narrow strip of land where the ocean lies on one side and large sand dunes rise on the other. As the sun lowers, the light changes and the colors of the sand and sea become warmer. Depending on tide conditions, the drive may continue along the beach or move inland through dune corridors.
Over time, the dunes close off the bay, creating a quiet and remote area with wide open views. Your guide explains the local ecosystem, ancient marine fossils found in the area, and the history of this coastal region. The tour includes controlled dune driving, with climbs and descents over high dunes, guided by an experienced driver.
From the top of the dunes, you can enjoy wide views of the desert and the ocean. Coastal fog may roll in, adding a soft look to the landscape that is well suited for photos. Wildlife sightings are possible and may include springbok, ostriches, jackals, hyenas, and small desert animals such as geckos, beetles, and snakes.
As the sun sets on the horizon, your guide prepares sundowner drinks in a quiet spot overlooking the sea. The dunes change color as the light fades, marking the end of the tour.
Important things to know include wearing comfortable walking shoes. Bring a hat, sunscreen, sunglasses, a camera, and a windbreaker, as coastal winds can be strong.
