Sandwich Harbour Full-day Tour from Walvis Bay

Sandwich Harbour Full-day Tour is a guided coastal journey that takes you deep into one of Namibia’s most well known desert and ocean meeting points. This tour is ideal for travelers who want a full day of exploration along the coast, with time to enjoy birdlife, dunes, wildlife, and wide open views.

The tour lasts about eight hours and starts in the morning at the Walvis Bay Lagoon. This lagoon is an important birding area, and depending on the season, you may see flamingos, cormorants, avocets, and pelicans feeding in the shallow water. Your guide explains the role the lagoon plays for both resident and migratory birds.

From Walvis Bay, the journey continues south along the coastline. If the tide allows, the drive follows the edge of the ocean, with waves on one side and sand on the other. Along this stretch, keep an eye out for jackals, ostriches, and Cape Fur Seals resting near the shore or moving between the dunes.

You then arrive at the point where large sand dunes drop straight into the Atlantic Ocean. Depending on tide conditions, the drive may continue along the beach or move inland through dune corridors. The route changes daily, making each Sandwich Harbour Full-day Tour slightly different.

Sandwich Harbour Lagoon was once used as a natural harbour by fishermen in the 19th century. Over time, moving sand dunes closed off the bay, leaving behind a remote coastal area with little human activity. Your guide shares information about the history, geology, and natural environment of the region.

Around midday, your guide sets up a picnic style lunch on top of a dune overlooking the ocean. You enjoy your meal while looking out across the sand and sea. During this break, wildlife sightings are possible, including springbok, ostriches, hyenas, and jackals moving through the dunes.

After lunch, there is time to climb selected dunes, walk around viewpoints, and take photos. The return journey heads inland, leaving the dunes behind and traveling back toward Walvis Bay.

Important things to know include bringing sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat for sun protection. A camera and binoculars are useful for wildlife and bird viewing. A windbreaker is recommended due to coastal winds.
